Patient Flow Quarterly | Fall 2017 Now available!

Patient Flow Quarterly - Issue 7 FALL

We’re pleased to share that the Fall 2017 digital issue of Patient Flow Quarterly is now available.

In this issue we’re focused on patient flow as a journey—and our commitment to that journey. That means we are working to improve the client experience; to extend value across the care continuum; and to bring you focused investments on everything from the command center to mobile devices.

Stories include thoughts from TeleTracking Chairman and CEO Michael Zamagias on his personal journey with patient flow; the billions of dollars spent on healthcare IT and the importance of turning the focus back to caregivers; and a Q&A with Susan Kilgore, RN, Vice President of Patient Management/Rural Outreach for Methodist Healthcare and winner of the inaugural DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in Patient Flow.

You’ll also find industry news, as well as information about upcoming events like Transforming Patient Access: A Healthcare Executive Forum  on November 17 in Nashville. We hope you find the information valuable and it helps you learn, grow and make a positive impact on patient care at your facility.

TeleTracking Offering Protects Against 2-Midnight Rule

2-Midnight RuleRecent buzz suggests that the 2-Midnight Rule may be replaced with a “kinder, gentler” short-stay payment model. But long-time Medicare watchers say, “don’t bet on it.” Even though the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is asking for input on a short stay payment structure, there’s no guarantee that the controversial rule will go away anytime soon…if ever.

The 2-Midnight Rule is intended to reduce the admission of Medicare patients who could be treated on an outpatient basis. The rule aims to limit the growth in extended observation stays at hospitals, which have skyrocketed in recent years.

The NSA and the Future of Healthcare

NSA-spying-future-of-healthcare (350x234)In the “Brave New World” of Healthcare, futurists insist the primary focus will be on prevention, with the help of technology to gather data.

That doesn’t mean just jogging a few miles a week and cutting back on the pork rinds.  In fact, in one futurist scenario about the Patient-Centered Medical Home (see #4 “I am my own medical home” pages 14-16), citizens will use home-based bio-monitors and other devices to constantly update electronic medical records, resulting in more timely preventative care. They will have access to a digital health coach (avatar), a virtual person who condenses online medical information to provide advice on behavioral changes to improve their health.
